Favor Runner Review: H-E-B's Texas-Only Delivery Gig

What Favor is for Runners

Favor is an on-demand delivery app that operates only in Texas and has been owned by H-E-B since February 2018. As a Runner you are an independent contractor who accepts delivery offers in the app, picks up restaurant meals, alcohol, groceries, or store items, and drops them at the customer's door.

The company was founded in Austin in 2013. When H-E-B bought it, TechCrunch reported about 50 Texas cities, more than 50,000 Runners, and 8 million deliveries, with Favor continuing as an independent, wholly owned subsidiary. By June 2026 Favor's own press boilerplate claimed more than 400 Texas cities, over 100,000 Runners, and more than 100 million deliveries. Those are company figures: the public cities page names roughly 50 locations grouped under Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Houston. The homepage puts the footprint bluntly: "Proudly unavailable in 49 states."

The order mix is broader than restaurant delivery. Favor lists food, drinks, household essentials, alcohol in select cities, and H-E-B grocery orders. In June 2026 GoTo Foods added more than 550 Texas locations of Auntie Anne's, Cinnabon, Jamba, McAlister's Deli, and Schlotzsky's to the app, though those brands stay on DoorDash and Uber Eats as well.

How Favor Runner pay works

Favor pays a per-delivery base plus tips and occasional promos. The official Runner page puts base pay at $2 to $14+ per delivery, set by time, distance, and effort. Runners keep 100% of the customer's tip, and Favor requires a minimum tip on every order. There is no published hourly rate and no published guarantee.

Promos are the third piece: Favor says they raise earnings when you complete deliveries in specific neighborhoods or during a specific time period, which is the same surge logic every delivery app runs. One widely repeated figure, that base pay starts at $2.10 per delivery, comes from Gridwise's April 2025 blog rather than from Favor's current Runner page, so treat it as reported, not official.

A caution on older guides. Driver blogs from 2024 and earlier describe an hourly minimum during scheduled hours and a percentage-of-proceeds model. The current Runner page contains no scheduling, no guarantee, and no "Runner Hours" language at all. We could not verify that any hourly floor exists in 2026, so plan on pure per-delivery pay and treat any guarantee you hear about as unconfirmed until you see it in your own app.

What Favor Runners actually earn

The only large-sample tracked figure comes from Gridwise's annual Gig Mobility Report published February 18, 2025: Favor Runners averaged $11.97 per hour in 2024, up 10% from the year before. Favor was the only delivery platform in that report whose hourly pay rose. The figure is gross, before gas, vehicle wear, and taxes.

Two gaps matter. Gridwise's 2026 report, published in March 2026 on 2024 and 2025 data, does not break Favor out at all, so there is no tracked 2026 median; the $11.97 is a year and a half old. And self-reported job-board averages for "Favor Runner" disagree with each other by a wide margin from one site to the next, which says more about small samples than about Favor. The required minimum tip, and why it matters

Tips carry more structural weight on Favor than on most delivery apps because Favor requires a minimum tip on every order and suggests a tip based on the cost of the items and the distance traveled. Customers can adjust the tip after delivery, and the Runner receives 100% of it. That makes tips the swing factor in every hour you work.

On the customer side, Favor's FAQ lists a standard delivery fee of $6 that varies by location or merchant, plus a service fee charged as a percentage of the order. Favor Gold, launched March 2025 at $9.99 a month after a trial, waives delivery fees on almost everything in the app and reduces service fees. Favor has not said whether membership changes what Runners are paid, so we make no claim either way.

Because the tip is adjustable after the drop, the number on the offer card is not the number you were paid. Record what actually cleared per order. Tips reported through the platform can also count toward the federal qualified tips deduction for delivery drivers, worth up to $25,000 a year through 2028 for those who qualify, which is one more reason to keep a per-order tip record instead of a weekly total.

H-E-B orders: shop-and-deliver with the Runner card

Favor is also H-E-B's quick-grocery arm. H-E-B Now launched inside the Favor app in August 2024, delivering up to 15 grocery items in 45 minutes or less, and Runners shop those orders themselves. Favor's Runner page pitches it as "Get paid to shop at H-E-B": follow the in-app prompts, then pay at checkout with your Runner card by tap to pay or QR code.

Grocery Dive's launch coverage listed produce, ready-made meals, household essentials, deli, frozen, pet care, baby items, and sauces as the categories. Customers can set H-E-B Now and H-E-B Beer & Wine orders to recur, which means predictable repeat volume near H-E-B stores. Alcohol deliveries require the recipient to be 21 or older and present a valid ID to the Runner in person, so budget the extra minute at the door.

The economics of a shop-and-deliver order differ from a restaurant handoff. Your in-store time is not paid by the clock; it is folded into the "effort" component of base pay along with time and distance. A 15-item cap keeps that bounded, which is the point of the format, but a Runner who takes mostly H-E-B Now orders should compute an hourly that includes aisle time, not just driving time.

Requirements and onboarding

Favor's entry bar is low and unusually flexible on vehicles. Per the official Runner page you must be at least 18 with a smartphone, a valid driver's license, reliable transportation - a car, truck, motorcycle, or scooter - with personal auto insurance, a bank account for direct deposit, and a clean driving record and background check.

Bicycles are not on that list, even though older third-party guides say otherwise, so do not plan a bike-only sign-up without confirming with Favor. No experience is required; Favor points new Runners at "Running 101" videos, and the Runner card used at checkout is provided. Applications run through run.favordelivery.com, where you can log in to see your sign-up status. Favor's Runner privacy supplement notes that its identity vendor may use facial recognition during verification and that background checks include criminal records.

Insurance is better than average for gig work. Since November 2019 Favor has provided commercial liability protection to Runners during an active delivery, automatically and at no charge, on top of the Runner's personal policy. That covers the delivery itself, not the drive to the pickup or your idle time between offers, so the business-use exclusion in your own auto policy still deserves a read.

Getting paid, and when you can work

Favor pays weekly by automatic direct deposit, and Instant Pay moves earnings to a debit card any time for a flat $0.99 per transfer. A flat fee is cheaper than a percentage cut after a big day and relatively expensive after a $30 evening, so treat it as a cash-flow tool rather than a default habit.

Working hours are bounded by the app. Favor's FAQ says most areas run 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, while major metros - Austin, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Lubbock, Waco, College Station, Denton, San Marcos, and the Rio Grande Valley - stay open until midnight. There is no overnight shift, which removes the late-night bar rush that rideshare drivers rely on.

Scheduling is pure on-demand: you open the app and accept offers. Why Texas drivers multi-app Favor with DoorDash

Favor's economics push toward running it alongside another app. Its 2024 tracked hourly trailed DoorDash by 26 cents and Uber Eats by about $3, and a Texas-only footprint means demand thins quickly outside the big metros. Favor as a sole income is a hard case to make; Favor as the second app on the phone is an easy one.

What Favor adds to the stack is specific. H-E-B Now orders exist nowhere else. The required minimum tip removes the zero-tip offer that DoorDash Dashers screen out by hand. The GoTo Foods deal adds restaurant volume from summer 2026, and smaller Texas cities have fewer Runners competing for it. What it costs you is the ceiling: one state, one company's demand, and an hourly that has not been independently measured since 2024.

The practical method is the same one that works for every pair of apps. Run both for a few weeks, log every offer with its platform, mileage, and tip, and rank them by net per hour in your zone rather than by anyone's median. Taxes: the 1099, the tips, and the miles Favor does not log

Runners are independent contractors, so nothing is withheld. Self-employment tax of 15.3% applies to 92.35% of your net earnings, and quarterly estimated tax payments are your responsibility. The 1099-NEC threshold rose to $2,000 for payments made in 2026, so a light part-time Runner can finish the year with no form at all and a full tax bill.

The larger deduction is mileage, and Favor's app is not a mileage log. Every Runner order has a leg to the pickup, a leg to the customer, and repositioning between offers, all business miles. The 2026 IRS rate is split: 72.5 cents per mile for January through June and 76 cents from July 1. A Runner covering 500 working miles a month is looking at roughly $380 of deduction a month for the rest of 2026.

IRS Publication 463 asks for the date, miles, destination, and business purpose of each business drive, recorded at or near the time. Reconstructing that in April from Favor's earnings history does not meet the standard. Verdict: who Favor fits

Favor fits a Texas driver who wants a second app with a built-in tip floor and exclusive H-E-B grocery volume, not a primary income. The tracked hourly is average for delivery, the footprint ends at the state line, and pay is per delivery with no guarantee we could verify on Favor's current pages.

Go in with the right expectations: base pay from $2, tips that customers can change after delivery, hours that end at 10 PM in most towns, and a Runner card that turns some offers into grocery shopping. All of it argues for keeping your own ledger.
