Gopuff Driver Review: Warehouse Delivery Without the Restaurant Wait

TL;DR

What is Gopuff for drivers?

Gopuff is warehouse-based convenience delivery. The company stocks around 4,000 products in its own local micro-fulfillment centers, Gopuff employees pack every order, and delivery partners carry finished orders from that one pickup point to the customer. There is no restaurant queue, no in-store shopping, and no merchant handoff - you return to the same facility after each drop.

That single difference drives everything else in this review. Restaurant apps make you absorb kitchen delays for free; Gopuff concentrates the waiting in one parking lot, where it is predictable and - on scheduled blocks - partly paid. The company operates hundreds of micro-fulfillment centers across the US and UK, and it is one of the few platforms in our State of Gig Work 2026 report built around a home-base model rather than pure ping-chasing.

How Gopuff pay works

Gopuff's official formula is Base Pay + Promotions (Missions) + Tips + Wait Pay, with Wait Pay applying only to scheduled delivery partners. Base Pay is a per-trip fee "determined by the estimated time and effort required to complete the trip," and Gopuff states that delivery partners always keep 100% of their tips.

What the official pages do not contain is a single dollar figure. There is no public rate card for Base Pay, and Missions - bonuses for completing a set number of deliveries in a window, or boosts on each order - vary by market and week. Third-party blogs quote specific per-order base pay ranges, but nothing on Gopuff's own pages backs them, so treat any exact number you read elsewhere as driver-reported, not official.

Wait Pay: the paid parking lot

Wait Pay is a per-minute rate earned while you wait at the facility for an order during a scheduled block - Gopuff's own example is $0.20 per minute. It accrues only while you are online, physically at the facility, and holding no trip offer. It is not an hourly guarantee, and Gopuff publishes no actual market rates.

Modest as it is, this is the feature that separates Gopuff from restaurant apps: some downtime is compensated. At the example rate, a 30-minute lull inside a block pays $6 instead of nothing. Partners delivering on demand without a block earn no Wait Pay at all, which is the main economic argument for chasing blocks in the first place.

What Gopuff drivers actually earn

The most credible numbers come from Gridwise, which tracked 953 Gopuff drivers through 2025: median trip earnings of $14.65 per hour, $15.16 per hour gross including incentives, $17.31 per hour for the top quarter, and $20.95 for the top 10%. Indeed's estimate runs higher, about $21 per hour, but comes from a handful of job postings.

Read those together and the picture is clear: a typical tracked hour lands in the mid-teens gross, before vehicle costs. The warehouse model is why throughput is high - 2.15 deliveries per hour in Gridwise's data, with no kitchen to wait on - but short convenience runs keep the per-trip fee small. As with Instacart batch pay, your real hourly includes every unpaid gap, so treat $18-21 as a good hour on Gopuff, not a typical one.

Tips are half the paycheck

Tips carry Gopuff earnings: Gridwise's tracked data puts the median tip at $3.66 per delivery, with tips making up about 51% of drivers' hourly earnings. A shift where tips run thin is a below-average shift almost by definition, so record every tip - cash included - next to the trip that produced it.

There is now a tax reason to be precise about it. For 2025 through 2028, federal law allows a deduction of up to $25,000 per year for qualified tips, and app-based delivery drivers are explicitly on the IRS occupations list (code 804, "goods delivery people"). The deduction phases out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 filing jointly), cannot exceed your net business income, and reduces income tax only - self-employment tax still applies to every tipped dollar. A per-trip record that separates tips from base pay is what makes the deduction defensible.

Scheduled blocks vs delivering on demand

At some facilities - not all - you can request scheduled blocks in the driver app. Blocks for the following week are released Thursday mornings, requests are due by 11:59 PM local time that Thursday, and unclaimed blocks are re-released Friday, first come, first served. Requesting a block does not guarantee you get it.

Blocks are optional: Gopuff's help center is explicit that you can deliver "as much or as little as you want" by simply going to your facility and starting a session. The trade-off resembles the route platforms like Veho: a block buys you Wait Pay and a predictable calendar, but it parks you at one facility on one app while it runs. Gopuff is the anti-multi-app - that is either its best feature or its cap, depending on what your market's dead hours look like.

Requirements, signup, and the waitlist

The bar is low by gig standards: at least 21 years old, a valid US driver's license, a vehicle with insurance in your name, and a current smartphone. Gopuff runs a motor vehicle record check and a criminal background check, and says approval typically takes 4-5 days, up to a week.

Bike delivery exists in some markets and drops the license and insurance requirements - a government ID suffices. The real gate is capacity: if your chosen location is full, Gopuff places you on a waitlist and emails you "until there is a need for more delivery partners in that area." No wait time is published, though support can move your application to a different location. Check whether your market is open before you plan a week around this app.

Alcohol delivery: certification built into onboarding

Every new partner completes a responsible-delivery course during signup, and some states require an additional alcohol delivery certification on top. On alcohol orders, the driver app prompts you to scan the customer's ID, verifies their age, and collects a signature - without the scan, the handoff cannot complete.

Treat the course as part of the job rather than optional homework. Alcohol and other regulated products are core to what Gopuff sells, the age-verification flow is entirely in-app, and in eligible markets certified partners simply have access to more of the order pool than uncertified ones.

Where Gopuff stands in 2026

Gopuff is still onboarding drivers and still raising money. In November 2025 it closed a $250 million round led by Eldridge Industries and Valor Equity Partners, citing record revenue and "the strongest financial position in company history." Bloomberg reported the deal valued the company at $8.5 billion, down from $15 billion in 2021.

Both halves of that sentence matter. The company's framing is growth - the raise funds AI, customer experience, and expansion, and Gopuff now accepts SNAP EBT nationwide - while the valuation cut is a reminder that the instant-delivery boom cooled. The practical read for a driver: no 2025-2026 market exits or driver-side cutbacks surfaced in our research, but the waitlist system shows Gopuff adds drivers to demand, market by market, rather than everywhere at once.

Taxes: no withholding, and the log is yours

Gopuff delivery partners are independent contractors. Nothing is withheld from your pay, so self-employment tax and quarterly estimated payments are your job. Earnings paperwork arrives through Stripe Express, with 1099-NEC forms delivered by the end of January for drivers over the reporting threshold.

Two records problems hide in that sentence. First, federal law raised the 1099-NEC threshold to $2,000 for payments made in 2026 (Gopuff's FAQ still cites the old $600 figure), so many part-timers will get no form at all - the income is taxable either way, as our 1099 guide explains. Second, Gopuff's tax documents cover earnings only; its help center says nothing about mileage records. The log is entirely on you, at 2026's split rate of 72.5 cents per mile for January-June driving and 76 cents for July-December.

GigOdo covers both gaps free: automatic trip detection with no cap, per-platform earnings and tip entry, and deduction totals computed at the correct rate for each half of 2026.

Verdict: who Gopuff fits

Gopuff fits drivers who want predictable, single-app hours more than a ceiling to chase. One pickup point, employee-packed orders, and partly paid waiting make it the most job-like of the convenience apps - and the same structure caps upside, with tracked median earnings in the mid-teens per hour before vehicle costs.

Take it if your market has openings, a facility sits close to home, and you value throughput over lottery tickets. Skip it if you are chasing top-decile hourly numbers - on Gopuff those belong to the best 10% of tracked drivers - or if multi-apping is your edge, since blocks lock you in. Either way, run your own per-shift numbers, dollars per hour and per mile after costs, and compare the alternatives in our platform guides.
