Shipt Shopper Review: Target's Grocery Gig in 2026

TL;DR

What Shipt is for shoppers

Shipt is Target's same-day delivery arm, and as a shopper you are an independent contractor who claims individual orders, shops them in the aisles yourself, and delivers inside a member's chosen window. Target agreed to buy the company for $550 million in cash in December 2017, and Shipt now covers more than 5,000 US cities.

The work is a full shop, not a handoff. You pick the items, handle out-of-stocks and substitutions over chat, check out, and drive the order to the door. Deliveries come from a range of partner retailers - groceries, alcohol, and general merchandise - so a Shipt week is closer to personal shopping than to restaurant delivery, and the pay math follows from that.

What Shipt shoppers actually earn

The most credible numbers come from Gridwise, which tracked 3,316 Shipt shoppers through 2025 and published the analysis on April 1, 2026. The median was $17.44 per hour in trip pay, rising to $18.57 gross once bonuses are counted. The top quarter cleared $21.02 an hour; the top 10% reached $25.05.

Read the middle rows together and the platform explains itself: roughly one order an hour at about $16.64. Shipt is not paying a premium per mile so much as handing you one long, dense job instead of several short ones. Tips carry about a third of gross pay at $5.83 a median order, which makes customer relationships part of the income rather than a bonus on it.

How offer pay and promos work

Shipt shows one estimated number on each offer card - offer pay - calculated from the shopping time, the delivery distance, and the complexity of the order. You claim what you want from the available list. Shipt's published pay standard says no offer will be less than $16 an hour, and more than $27 an hour in select markets.

Read that guarantee precisely. It is measured against Shipt's own estimate of how long an order should take, not the clock you actually burn on it. A 60-item shop with six substitutions and a third-floor walkup pays what the card said; your real hourly is whatever is left after the store fought you. Promo pay gets added to orders nobody has claimed as the delivery window closes in, which shoppers commonly describe as a few extra dollars rather than a rescue.

Preferred Shoppers: the relationship advantage

This is the structural difference from a pure batch lottery. A member who rates you five stars can add you to their Preferred Shopper list; if you accept the request, you are prioritized for that member's future orders. Shipt launched the feature nationwide on August 24, 2021, and members can hold several preferred shoppers at once.

Shipt's own account of the rollout is worth knowing: about 95% of test participants used the feature immediately, and paired customers ordered more frequently, reported fewer item issues, and tipped more. For a shopper that compounds into the same store, a familiar list, and a known tipper - the closest thing gig work has to a regular client.

The mechanism cuts both ways. A downrating removes you from the list, so the upside is built on service quality you have to keep delivering. It also means the good work in a market is not evenly distributed: established shoppers accumulate members, and a new shopper's first weeks read worse than the platform's median.

Shipt vs Instacart: where the gap comes from

In the same 2025 dataset, Shipt shoppers earned about 43% more per hour than Instacart shoppers - $17.44 against $12.21. Both jobs are grocery shopping with a car, so the gap is not the work. It is order size, membership demand, and the fact that repeat pairings concentrate the better orders on the same people.

Be honest about what a median hides. Instacart operates in vastly more places and pays a $12.79 median batch against Shipt's $16.64 order, so a thin Shipt market can easily lose to a busy Instacart one. Our Instacart batch pay breakdown walks the other side of that comparison, and the State of Gig Work 2026 report ranks every major platform on the same tracked data.

The pay algorithm history, and the Minnesota settlement

Two items belong on any honest Shipt record. In 2020 the company replaced a flat commission with an effort-based algorithm, and shoppers organized walkouts saying their pay fell. In September 2025 Shipt paid the State of Minnesota $800,000 to settle a worker misclassification lawsuit filed by the attorney general in 2022.

On the first: contemporaneous reporting described the old model as a 7.5% commission plus $5 per order, replaced across all markets by the end of September 2020 with a formula Shipt said priced effort more accurately. Organizers said the opposite happened in practice. Neither side published order-level data, so treat it as a documented dispute rather than a settled fact - and as a reason to keep your own per-order records.

The settlement is more concrete. For Minnesota shoppers, Shipt agreed to give written reasons for deactivation with an appeal answered inside three business days, keep earnings records for three years and provide weekly pay statements on request, keep no portion of tips, offer an electronic process to forgive customer ratings and late delivery fees, and continue occupational accident coverage. Shoppers remain independent contractors; the settlement changed conditions, not classification.

Getting paid: Friday deposits and Instant Pay

Shipt pays weekly. Direct deposit lands every Friday for the Monday through Sunday week before, which is a slower cadence than the near-instant deposits some delivery platforms now run. Instant Pay lets you cash out up to three times a day once you have accepted a Stripe Connect agreement and received at least one successful weekly payout.

Tips are paid at 100% whether the member adds them at checkout, hands you cash, or adds them afterward in the app. Because a third of your gross arrives as tips and some of it lands after the fact, the number on your offer card is not the number you were paid. Record what actually cleared, per order, if you want a real hourly.

Requirements and where Shipt operates

The entry bar is among the lowest in gig work. Shipt asks that you be at least 18, have a valid mailing address, a valid US driver's license, a Social Security number and auto insurance, a reliable operable vehicle, the ability to lift 50 pounds, and a smartphone running iOS 13 or newer or Android 7.0 or newer. A third-party vendor runs a motor vehicle report and criminal background check.

Two practical notes. Shipt publishes no vehicle model-year requirement and provides no commercial auto insurance, so your personal policy and its business-use exclusions are your problem to check. And coverage has holes: Shipt's own shopper page states it does not operate in Alaska, Wyoming, or West Virginia, so confirm your address before planning a week around the app.

Taxes: the 1099 arrives, the mileage log does not

Shipt shoppers are independent contractors with no withholding, so self-employment tax and quarterly estimated tax payments are yours to manage. Tax forms are issued through Stripe. One thing changed for 2026: the federal 1099-NEC reporting threshold rose from $600 to $2,000, so a part-time shopper can finish the year with no form at all and a full tax bill.

The bigger money is in mileage, and no earnings summary is a mileage log. IRS Publication 463 asks for the date, miles, destination, and business purpose of each business drive, recorded at or near the time. A grocery order has a leg to the store and a leg to the member, plus the drive to the next store - all of it business, none of it on your 1099.

The 2026 business rate is split: 72.5 cents per mile for January through June and 76 cents from July 1. A shopper covering 600 working miles a month is looking at about $456 of deduction a month in the second half of the year. Run your own totals through the 2026 mileage deduction calculator, and if you shop both apps, the Instacart tax filing guide covers the same Schedule C ground.

Verdict: who Shipt fits

Shipt suits shoppers who are good with people and patient in a store. The pay leads grocery delivery on measured data, the Preferred Shopper system rewards consistency in a way batch-lottery apps do not, and the requirements let almost anyone with a car apply. It is a poor fit if you want to churn quick handoffs between pings.

Go in with clear eyes on the catches: one order an hour means a bad shop costs you a whole hour, the $16 standard is measured against Shipt's clock rather than yours, three states have no service, and money arrives on Friday unless you cash out early. All of that argues for keeping your own ledger. GigOdo does it free - automatic mileage, per-platform earnings and tips, and your real net per hour - so you can rank Shipt against the rest of our platform reviews, including the Walmart Spark driver review that currently tops the pay charts, on numbers that are yours.

Does Shipt guarantee $16 an hour?
Shipt's published pay standard says no offer will be less than $16/hour in any market, and more than $27/hour in select markets. It is measured against Shipt's estimate of the time and effort an order takes, so a shop that runs long earns less per real hour.
How does Shipt offer pay work?
Each offer card shows one estimated pay number built from shopping time, delivery distance, and order complexity, and you claim the orders you want. Tips are paid on top at 100%, and promo pay is sometimes added to orders that have gone unclaimed.
What is a Shipt Preferred Shopper?
A member who rates you five stars can add you to their Preferred Shopper list; if you accept, you are prioritized for their future orders. Shipt launched it nationwide on August 24, 2021 and reported that paired customers ordered more often, saw fewer item issues, and tipped more.
Is Shipt better than Instacart for shoppers?
On tracked 2025 medians Shipt paid about 43% more per hour: $17.44 against $12.21. The gap is order size and repeat customers, not a better rate card, and medians hide wide market variance. Compare your own net per hour on both.
When does Shipt pay shoppers?
Direct deposit every Friday for the Monday through Sunday week before. Instant Pay allows up to three cashouts a day once you have accepted a Stripe Connect agreement and had one successful weekly payout. Tips are 100% yours whenever they are added.
What are the requirements to be a Shipt shopper?
At least 18, a valid mailing address, a US driver's license, Social Security number and auto insurance, a reliable operable vehicle, the ability to lift 50 pounds, and a phone running iOS 13+ or Android 7.0+. A third-party vendor runs the driving and criminal checks.
Does Shipt track mileage for taxes?
No earnings summary is a mileage log. Pub 463 wants the date, miles, destination, and purpose of each business drive, recorded at or near the time. Your store leg and delivery leg are worth 72.5 cents per mile January through June 2026 and 76 cents from July 1, only if you logged them.
