Fuel cost per mile is one division: the price you paid per gallon divided by the miles per gallon you actually get. At the EIA's $4.079 national average for regular gasoline the week ending August 3, 2026, a car returning 25 MPG burns 16.3 cents of gas every mile it moves - loaded or empty, paid or unpaid.

That number is the only fuel figure worth carrying in your head. Pump price alone tells you nothing, because a 45-MPG hybrid at $4.50 gas is cheaper per mile than a 20-MPG truck at $3.50. Here is the whole grid at this week's national average.

Measure your real MPG before you change anything

You cannot cut a number you have not measured, and the window sticker is not it. EPA ratings come from standardized test cycles; delivery work is close to the worst case those cycles model - short hops, constant restarts, long idles, a loaded car. Most drivers land well under the sticker.

The fill-up method takes two minutes a tank. Fill until the pump clicks off, reset the trip odometer, drive a normal working tank, then fill to the click again and note the gallons on the receipt. Miles divided by gallons is your real MPG. Do it for three tanks and average them - one tank is weather and traffic noise.

Keep the receipt totals somewhere you will see them next month. A tank-over-tank record is what turns "I think it got worse" into a number you can act on, and it is the same discipline behind reading your own day-part data instead of guessing.

The Department of Energy publishes estimated fuel-economy penalties for most of the things drivers argue about. Laid side by side, the ranking is lopsided: behavior and weather sit at the top, and the maintenance items that get the most attention sit at the bottom. This is the chart to argue with, not the forum thread.

Driving style is the whole ballgame

The DOE estimates that aggressive driving - speeding, rapid acceleration, and hard braking - lowers gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic. Delivery work is stop-and-go by definition, so a delivery driver sits squarely in the widest, most expensive band on the list.

Put that against the table above. A driver averaging 25 MPG who trims a 15% aggressive-driving penalty moves to roughly 29 MPG, or 14.2 cents a mile instead of 16.3. Over 30,000 miles that is about $630 - more than every maintenance tweak in this article combined, from a habit change that costs nothing.

The mechanics are dull and they work: look two blocks ahead so you lift off the throttle instead of braking, accelerate as if there is a full drink in the cupholder, and let the car coast to red lights rather than sprinting to them. Every hard stop is fuel you already bought, converted into brake heat.

Idling: the cost you can hear

Idling burns a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour, per the DOE, while covering zero miles. At $4.079 a gallon that is about $1.02 to $2.04 for every hour the engine runs parked. It is the only fuel expense on this list with a per-mile cost of infinity, because there are no miles in the denominator.

Delivery drivers idle more than almost anyone: waiting on a late order, sitting in a hot-zone parking lot, running the heater between pings. A driver idling 45 minutes a shift over five shifts a week, 50 weeks a year, spends about 187 hours parked with the engine on - roughly $190 to $380 a year.

The fix is not heroic. Shut it off for waits longer than a minute or two in mild weather, and treat climate-control idling as a comfort purchase you are consciously making rather than a default. Restarting a modern engine uses far less fuel than minutes of idling.

Speed, on the routes where it applies

Gas mileage usually drops off above 50 mph. The DOE estimates a 7% to 14% fuel-economy benefit from easing off, and frames it memorably: each 5 mph you drive over 50 mph is like paying an additional $0.29 per gallon at the pump price its calculator assumes.

For dense-city delivery this barely applies - you are rarely above 40. It matters a lot for suburban runs, long catering drops, and highway-heavy route work, where a 70-mph cruise instead of 60 quietly resets your cost per mile for the whole trip. If your week mixes both, that difference is exactly the kind of thing per-platform tracking exposes when you compare a multi-apping strategy across order types.

Tire pressure, oil, and weight: small, free, worth doing

These are the tips that fill most gas-saving articles, and they are real - just small. Proper tire inflation improves gas mileage by 0.6% on average and up to 3% in some cases, and every 1 psi drop in average pressure costs about 0.2%. Ten psi low across the car is roughly a 2% penalty, plus tire wear and a safety problem.

Using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil is worth 1% to 2%; the DOE's own example is that 10W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-30 costs 1% to 2%. Weight and drag round it out: an extra 100 pounds cuts MPG by about 1%, and a roof cargo box costs 2% to 8% in city driving, 6% to 17% on the highway, and 10% to 25% at interstate speeds.

For a driver, that last figure is the actionable one. If you carry a roof box or a rack you only need on catering days, taking it off the other five days is the single largest hardware change available to you. Hot bags and coolers in the cabin are cheap by comparison at about 1% per 100 pounds.

Weather takes a bigger bite than any hack

Air conditioning is the main fuel cost of summer driving. The DOE says AC use can reduce a conventional vehicle's fuel economy by more than 25% under very hot conditions, particularly on short trips - a precise description of delivery work in August. Its guidance is practical: roll the windows down at lower speeds and use the AC at highway speeds, where open windows add real drag.

Winter is worse and less avoidable. City fuel economy runs roughly 15% lower at 20 degrees F than at 77 degrees F, and as much as 24% lower on short 3- to 4-mile trips - the exact trip length most food deliveries are. Hybrids take a bigger hit, typically 20% to 40% in cold city driving.

You cannot fix the weather, but you can price it. If January costs you 20% of your MPG, your break-even offer size in January is genuinely higher than in May, which is a real input into the after-gas math on an offer rather than an excuse.

What does not work

Premium fuel is the expensive one. FuelEconomy.gov says higher octane may slightly improve performance and mileage during severe duty such as towing in hot weather, but that under normal driving conditions you may get little to no benefit - and where premium is recommended rather than required, the cost increase is typically higher than the fuel savings.

Air filters are the other. On vehicles with fuel-injected, computer-controlled gasoline engines - which is every car built in the last several decades - the DOE states that replacing a clogged air filter does not improve fuel economy, though it can improve acceleration. Replace it for engine health, not for MPG.

Bolt-on fuel-saving gadgets deserve the same skepticism: if a magnet or a chip delivered 20%, it would be standard equipment. And if you drive electric, most of this section is moot - the per-mile energy math works differently, which is covered in driving electric for gig work.

The lever that beats MPG: fewer unpaid miles

Here is the honest ceiling on everything above. A driver who does all of it well might move from 25 to 29 MPG and save roughly 2 cents a mile. Declining one 14-mile round trip that pays $4 saves the entire cost of those miles plus the wear, in about 25 minutes of your life.

Fuel efficiency is a multiplier on miles you have already decided to drive. Mile selection decides how many of them exist. Both belong in the same weekly review: what your gas actually costs per mile, and what fraction of your miles were paid at all.
